Entertaining Inside & Outside your Home

Of course you want to have a wonderful home so that you will have restful sleep, tasty meals, comfy living & a place to keep your belongings.  But don’t forget that once you have a happy place, you’ll probably want to have others over to enjoy your happy place with you!  This blog entry will fill your mind with ideas for entertaining in all the areas of your domicile.

Ok, so some you may have already tried, some you might not want to try…but at any rate, start thinking outside the four walls of your dining room when it comes to throwing a bash!

~ WARM WEATHER MONTHS & WARM WEATHER PLACES

If you are lucky enough to have mild weather all year, there’s not much stopping you from hosting your daytime or evening events outside.  Think beyond the BBQ grill…

Why stop at the outdoor dining room when you can set up an entire romantic “getaway” from your own bedroom suite?  It might take a friend to help with the heavy lifting but I bet your sweetie would be very pleasantly surprised to find a wonderful oasis right outside on a private deck or patio!

We are not all so lucky to live without the cold temps & snow but let’s take advantage & get cozy on a winter night…outside!

The traditional firepit is a big favorite of ours for impromptu get-togethers.

~ MORE IDEAS

When it is just too darn cold to have a party outside, there are lots of great things to try indoors…Poker Tournaments are among our favorites.  Everyone gets into the theme with a costume (Pirates, Gangsters, Rat Pack…) and the competition can get fierce!  Keeping the whole crowd involved with practice rounds & prizes (even for the least experienced players) makes for a very fun evening.  Try the dining room, rec room, garage — any place you can fit all the tables & seats you will need.  Chairs need to be comfortable — everyone sits for a long time — and the lighting needs to be decent so everyone can see their cards.

Obviously when it comes to kids parties, keeping them busy is a key ingredient as well, especially if they are all running around your house!  We have hosted sledding parties, rock-star video-making parties, robot-making parties & the old school backyard olympics.  Keeping them outside for much of the time helps keep the chaos in check.

One of the best tools I’ve learned for kid parties is face painting.  This is so easy & unbelievably keeps kids busy for hours while they select, watch & wait to get their face painted.  Online you can find lots of samples of the most popular “faces” that you simply copy with water-based paints, a sponge & a brush. (BTW, getting each face down to 5 minutes or less is key to keeping the kids attentive…)

As I sign off for this week, I just want to share my very favorite new trend with you — the outdoor lounging bed.  We are starting to see them everywhere from resort beaches & pools to hotel lobbies & nightclubs.  Everyone can lounge around together & it makes a very nice juxtaposition of something you expect to see inside, outdoors.

The Essence of Organizing

HAPPY HOLIDAYS! It is rapidly coming up on the NEW YEAR… you have NEW clothes NEW toys NEW clutter…do any of you have NEW space to store everything?  I did not think so!  How in the heck do you get it all into the same closets you already had bursting at the seams?

Here are the four key steps to organizing your small storage spaces:

1. DUMP it all out on the floor.  Not kidding.  Take it ALL out of the closet, the drawer, the pantry, the fridge (this one I do one shelf at a time), the garage… you have to make a huge mess & start with a clean slate to get to the root of the problem.  If you try to tidy around the current organizational problem, you won’t be able to do the next three steps appropriately.  Whenever I am trying to get things into the garage in a hurry, for example, I’ll just shove that box up into the corner or stack it wherever it is off the ground.  Guaranteed … inside is the one item I’ll never be able to find when I’m looking for it again in six months.

I have a favorite trick of dumping the pile onto a big tarp in the driveway if I am working on a garage, a big beach towel if I am working on a bathroom floor, a big blanket if I am working on a closet or drawer, etc.  This keeps the mess contained into the one spot & will not expand all over the place.  The next three steps come from that one pile & you will always know from which direction to which other spot you are working.  ((You also keep that crazy bathroom drawer dust & makeup off your bathroom floor — simply pick up the beach towel when you are done & toss it in the hamper!))

2. CATEGORIZE all the items you find into piles.  If we are in the bathroom, for example, get all that makeup into one pile, get all the nail stuff, the hair stuff, the lotions & potions, the bottles, jars, appliances, etc. all segregated.  Now evaluate what is in each pile…do you need ALL 42 of those emory boards?  Aren’t half of those nail polishes from the late 80’s??  That brings us to #3…

3. WEED out the nonsense!  I can almost guarantee you that about half of the items in your sock drawer are not in use.  If you go through your office desk drawers, you’ll probably find at least 7 different stashes of business cards — half of which are long out of date.  GET RID OF THEM!  With that newfangled internet, you could much more quickly google the contact info than find the old business card for that pet groomer you used 18 months ago!!

4. FIND A GOOD HOME for each of those categorized piles you have created.  Assess the amount & type of space you will need for each prior to picking a spot for the stuff.  For example, if you have over 30 hats, you cannot realistically keep them all on those two handy hat hooks you installed inside your closet.  You might need a tupperware bin or a long high shelf at the top of your closet for this lid collection of yours.  One might call me anal-retentive but when organizing clothing in a closet, it is very aesthetically pleasing to sort the clothing by color:

closet

Go ahead & laugh but if you get your hangers coordinated (all plastic, all wood, all foam…whatever you like best) and your clothing hangs neatly by color, you won’t feel like cramming your dry cleaning up against the wall when it comes in!  And putting away your laundry just got a whole lot less intimidating too…

If you are trying to keep your crafts organized in a closet or some drawers, the same applies: keep the like things together but also try to put them away in an aesthetically pleasing fashion.

HINT: Vertical works better than horizontal! I have noticed when my daughter has a basket in her closet for costumes or shoes for example, she’ll just continue to dump & dump & dump more stuff on top.  A year might go by before she ever finds something at the bottom of that basket.  I have learned to tip those sturdy wicker baskets up on their sidescloset so that we can store the books, shoes, backpacks or purses within a confined space that has walls to hold the things together without being constantly filled on top, leaving everything underneath hidden from sight forever.

This also works well for your “In-Box” or current items in use on your desk.  I always recommend to my clients who need help in organizing their lives to start keeping things in a vertical file.  It is sitting right there, staring you in the face!  You cannot lose that pertinent bill file if it is standing up vs. lying at the bottom of a heap…files I can basically run a small business, coordinate my volunteer commitments & operate the family’s bill-paying from this one small set of vertical files & a two-drawer filing cabinet.  When the mail is opened, each piece is either filed in the “To Pay” file, the “To File” pile or put into the trash.  If there is something that needs immediate attention it sits at the front of the vertical files staring at me until I deal with it.

I want to thank you once again for taking a visit to Marmot Home Design’s website & blog.  We will continue to do our best to inspire you to create a living environment that you & your family will love & enjoy every single day.

Smart Holiday Decorating

IMG_1156The holidays are upon us & here in Lake Tahoe, the snow has come just in time.  There’s no more beautiful compliment to the twinkling lights & rich red bows than a thick blanket of white on each of branch of the aspen or lodgepole pine trees around the neighborhood.  As promised, I wanted to offer a few ideas with regard to making smart, money-saving purchases for your holiday decorating.

There are so many wonderful ways to enhance your yard including the classic white tree lights, the tiny colored twinklers around your rooftop or the return of the classics like the large, colored Christmas lights in either the old glass-bulb style or the newer LED presentation.  These LEDs are hugely economical in terms of your electric bill as well as replacement costs as they are meant to last for hundreds of hours longer than the traditional light sets.  The colors are great & even the LED white lights give off a “white-hot” look to your home’s exterior.  You might like to try & mix them in for starters, especially if you already have a huge supply of the old style of lights like I do.  I really like the look of drenching a tree in simple white lights & then adding a few strands of the colored bulbs for that “sparkly ornament” appearance.IMG_8287

There are such creative things that you can do to stretch your holiday decor dollars by finding items that can be used during other times of the year to enhance your home.  The lights you choose might be those you could use outside your house all year-round, especially if they are the simple white twinklers & they are simply decorating some of the trees around your yard.  I have also found a very economical item at Ace Hardware that can be used throughout the year…for under $30 each (currently on sale for $19.99!) you could have a pair of these 4′ lighted faux pines (”Montana Pre-Lit Porch Pine Tree”) accenting your doorway. During the holidays it would be nice to add some bows or shiny ball ornaments, then keep it simple throughout the remainder of the year with just the white lights…

Using your summertime resin flowerpots to make a holiday statement is also an economical way to spruce up your entry:

IMG_8313

While setting the table for your guests during the holidays, there are a number of wonderful items you could include that would be usable during other times of the year with no problem.  Take a look at some of the gorgeous items I found at this town’s most stylish home-furnishing boutique, Seasons

IMG_8296IMG_8294IMG_8297

Set the table combining vibrant reds, greens, golds & silvers to create a fabulous holiday display… and then use each of these items in other settings, in other color schemes, during any other season.  Those green mossy rocks would look great with some gold balls during December & also the pinks of Easter come springtime.  The rich red Tuscan vessle & dinnerware paired with some evergreen boughs for Christmas dinner would also sit perfectly with the bright yellow linens pictured here for an Italian feast or summer dinner al fresco…  If purchases are made with other uses in mind, you won’t find yourself storing reindeer plates & santa mugs for 11 months every year!

IMG_8300

These functional & beautiful napkin holders with weighted accents obviously make nice decor pieces or gifts during the holidays.  But in keeping with our theme of spending our hard-earned dollars on items that won’t need to get put away on January 2nd, these trays can hold napkins of any color or style & even the weights can be changed out to coordinate with any holiday, season or theme party! ($44 at SeasonsTahoe.com)

Try to expand this theory to your wreath & front-door decorating decisions as well.  Take a look at these wreaths below… the same simple pepper berry wreath can be used for Halloween with a black satin & gingham checked bow as for Christmas by adding gold fruit & a bronzed metallic bow:

IMG_1144IMG_1145

IMG_8305HOWEVER!  Don’t let Scrooge take over your holiday!!  Even if these four-foot, bedazzled & sequined nutcrackers can only guard your door for a few weeks a year, wouldn’t you say that’s worth it?  I would!

Tips for Outside Your Home

I feel one thing people tend to underestimate is the importance of their home’s curb appeal & backyard areas.  If folks are building a new home or trying to sell their home, they will often have their attention drawn to the outside of the house but other than those instances, it is really easy to walk inside & start thinking about your decorating decisions there.  Just like we practice inside the home, there are a few basic areas to focus upon & some steps to making the outside areas of your property serene & relaxing places in which to spend your time.

Statement of Entry

Check out these two photos:

entry1

entry2

In the first shot, can you figure out how to get to the door?  Do you see where to enter?  Do you want to enter??  A statement of entry is just that: a STATEMENT!  It tells everyone from the street where the point of entry is & welcomes you right up to & in through your front door.  What a beautiful job the architect did with the new home in the second shot.  What kind of statement are you making?

Yes, architecture plays a big part in curb appeal but there is so much a homeowner can do with what they have.  The folks in the first home might really value their privacy but they might also consider cutting back on the pine branches, thinning the juniper bed & perhaps creating a pathway from the street to the door.

De-clutter, simplify, clean

It seems really basic & obvious to a lot of us, but I bet there are a few neighbors in your hood who think it is totally fine to “store” personal items outside the house in plain sight!

Oy...

Oy...

Surely they can find an out-of-the-way place for those strollers & kid bikes, the gardening equipment, snow blower, kayak, etc… (of course we know you don’t do this!) Storage sheds, fencing or a well-organized garage offer the easiest solutions to this dilemma.

After we de-clutter the non-décor items we find outside, we’ll spend some time “editing” the outdoor décor items that often accumulate over the years… various furnishings, sculptures, pottery, landscaping features, functional items like BBQ grills, play equipment, sun umbrellas, etc.   Give your area a critical once-over & see if you can eliminate a few items to clean up the look.  Keeping similar things together or balancing them with some symmetry will give a much more organized appearance as well.

ahh...

Ahh...

Of course it is not necessary to hide the grills or play equipment so try to make sure they are of good quality, well-maintained & as clean as possible.  A reputable, professional window cleaner is also money well spent!

After storing clutter & putting everything that stays in a nice organized spot,  it is time to get the exterior of the house clean!  When is the last time you hosed off the siding to free your house of dust, spider webs & leaves or debris?  Better yet, if your siding, shingles, stone or bricks can handle it, having your home power-washed could potentially bring out the freshness of the materials that you have not seen in years.

Update

Take a look at the lighting fixtures, the front door, garage door, decking, patio & railing materials & all the basic colors on the outside of your home.  Does any one thing jump out at you first?  Perhaps you can make a list & prioritize the projects.  It can certainly be overwhelming when you look at an outdated exterior & think there’s nothing that can be done that will even make a dent in the first impression but again, biting off small projects one at a time is going to get you going in the right direction.

update

New light fixtures can be surprisingly affordable & make a great first impression.  The street numbers you hang on your house can also be an important style choice.  New door hardware, welcome mat, & decorations would all spruce up this front entry.  The basic maintenance of your planters (re-staining these oak barrels, for example…) will always keep your exterior looking fresh & new.

Add Decor Pieces

We are at the final stages now in improving the outside of your home.  Selecting a few key decorative items to add to your front or back yard will complete the serene setting which will invite your friends & family to spend some time here!  Just as we need inside a home, your yard needs to include some furniture that allows for sitting & relaxing.  A comfortable table & chairs, a bench or even a swing in a tree will encourage time spent outside.

Beyond furniture to sit upon, you & your guests would probably like to have something to look at.  Key focal points can include foliage, gardens, fountains or other water features, sculptures or views.

fountain

Think about some of the best outdoor areas you have visited — these also tend to include things to do such as meandering walking paths, bird baths to fill & observe, fire pits to tend to, swings to sit on or push, even a backyard bar from which you may serve drinks!

Thank you once again for coming to Marmot Home Design’s website & blog.  Hopefully  you have been inspired to make some improvements to the outside of your home & will spend some more quality time enjoying the great outdoors!

Editing your decor for more serene surroundings

When I walk into many of my home staging engagements, all I tend to see around me is the stuff that has to go.    There are usually plenty of things that need to stay & of course a few items that need to be added but really, getting at the decor “editing” is what makes a room easier to view & a place in which you can envision spending relaxing time.  I believe this same editing theory is needed in our homes for more serene everyday living.

Let’s take a look at this bathroom, for example:

upstairs bath 1

upstairs bath 2

This room is lovely & not over-cluttered at all.  The problem I feel was with the many hues found in this one small space.  Your eye travels the room looking to take them all in & reconcile the pink in the flower arrangement with something else in that pink family.  We find the maroon towels, but those are so dark & seem chopped up by the pale tan towels.  The nice warm hues of the candle stand out alone… but that was the item I most liked with this wallpaper & flooring.

I used the candle to help me start over.  By pulling everything out of the flower arrangement that wasn’t in this warm scheme & finding a nice organic vase, we had a great foundation.  After the removal of the dark towels, we switched them out for subtle a subtle sage color already found in the leaves & stems of the arrangement.  Eliminating the decorative ball & bath mat kept the look clean & consistent. (hey, I know how easy it is to just use the towels that are handy — or clean! — for your guest bath, for example, but going to that little extra effort to use the right color gives the entire room that designer’s touch.)

How about one more example:

The bedroom here was filled with great decor pieces & the color scheme was nice.  There were just one or two too many items as you can see here:

master 1

master 2

The four prints plus the mirror over the bed went a little overboard.  You might also notice there were a few small silk flowers sitting in the pot holding the tall bamboo & another flower arrangement on the bedside table.  I’m sure the intent was to liven up the room with something organic & colorful.  A better option was the use of a red-shaded lamp in the design, accomplishing three things: it brightens up the space with the lamplight, brightens up the space with the brightly-colored lampshade & also pulls the whole room together by repeating the red from the accent pillows over on the desk.

I also preferred playing the artwork off of the bedding vs. the original super-contemporary heavy black frames of the first set of prints.  Now the setting is serene & restful.  Don’t you want to curl up with a nice book?

The best part about both of these transformations was the cost: $0.00.  Using the items in your home you can often pull things from other rooms before you ever have to go shopping.  Give this editing theory a try & see how you do.  Do your best to keep things simple in terms of number, type & color of items in each vignette.  You know what they say:  ”Less is More!”

Let’s Get Inspired….

Home design, home improvement, decorating, remodeling, de-cluttering… it all sounds like so much work! Oh, and it sounds really expensive too, doesn’t it?  Well, it really doesn’t have to be.  Don’t feel overwhelmed by a desire to improve your surroundings on your own.  The secret to making such changes is in getting the inspiration to bite off one small project at a time…

IMG_0959Step one is simple: Do yourself a favor & just simply sit down for a moment.  You need to quiet your mind & look at something captivating in order to get inspired!   I often find the colors, textures & patterns outside to be the most inspiring to me.

Now, use your hands to create a window & look around through this small box.  Sometimes taking in a snapshot of a scene will give you an artistic viewpoint that you wouldn’t have noticed with a sweeping look around the room, the yard or the scenery.  It also helps to block out the visual “noise” (like the swing set, the coats on the rack, the neighbor’s car outside the window, etc.)  Do you see something that engages your eye?  The colors of the changing leaves…the contrast of the grass against the driveway…the sky dotted by birds in a strangely uniform formation… the angled shadows on the corner of two walls… bright oranges or reds that keep drawing your eyes to those pillows… you get the idea.  You might realize through this exercise that you’ve found a color combination or a pattern you would like to see in one of your rooms.

greenLet’s say you’ve found you have an affinity for the blues & greens you see out on your deck like in the picture here.   Do I suggest you go out & redecorate your entire living room in these colors?  Not unless you want to! (Wow, you really did get inspired today…)

What you might try instead is to walk around your house & collect a few things within this scheme… pull them together & create a vignette somewhere small & contained, someplace which already has a neutral palate*.  A centerpiece on your dining table, a powder room, a guestroom bed or a corner of your office might work well for starters.  Arranging a bowl of pears, a candle, an apple-green dish against a backdrop of a cool blue photograph would give you a nice taste of this color scheme without the time, effort or investment of an entirely redecorated room.  Try it on & see if you like it for a while before you run out & buy a gallon of paint.

(*We’ll talk more about this later, but I must mention that the best part about keeping your basic walls & furnishings neutral is that you can move colors in & out via your accent pieces for dramatic updates without an enormous overhaul.)

I’m so glad you’ve found yourself here on the Marmot Home Design blog.  Please come back & visit often.  We’ll be sharing lots (OMG, TONS!) of simple ways for you to take on projects that create an environment you really love for you & your family to enjoy every day.
